Trusted Answer Optimisation
What SEO becomes when the answer can come from anywhere.

The answer no longer has one home
For twenty years SEO had one shape: work out what someone types, put a page in front of it, measure the position. That shape held because the answer had one home. A search returned ten links and the person picked one.
That is no longer how an answer gets built. Google and the assistants assemble an answer out of whatever they trust: a directory, a forum thread, a video, a publisher's guide, a review profile, and sometimes a company's own page. The page you optimised is one of the sources, and often not the decisive one.
Rankings are a symptom
Ranking is what happens when enough of the rest is true. By the time someone types your name into a search box, they have already decided to trust you somewhere else — in a thread, in a video, in an answer that named three firms and you were one of them.
Optimising the symptom still works, in the sense that a better page is a better page. It stops working as a strategy, because the position you win is downstream of a decision made somewhere you never looked.
Every search has a route
A buyer does not run one search. They run a sequence, and the sequence has a shape that repeats within a sector.
Someone looking for a financial adviser starts in the map pack, asks an assistant whether advice is worth paying for, opens a directory, checks a Reddit thread to see whether the directory can be trusted, then looks the shortlist up on LinkedIn. Someone pricing a kitchen extension starts on YouTube, because the question is "how much" and video answers it better than a page.
Same country, same month, different work. The first route is won with a complete profile, a page that states fees, and a reply in a thread. The second is won with a video and a price.
The metric is trust, measured in leads
If the answer is assembled from sources, the useful question is not "where do I rank" but "am I one of the sources, at the stops that matter, and which of those stops sends people who become customers".
That gives two numbers worth reporting. Answer share: of the stops on this route, at how many are you the trusted source. And leads by source: which stops actually produced enquiries. A rankings report answers neither.
What the work becomes
Trusted Answer Optimisation is the same discipline with a wider surface. The work is still research, pages, technical fixes and measurement. What changes is that the page is one output among several, and the target is the route rather than the ranking.
In practice that means four moves: find what the answer is built from, make the assets it is missing, place them in the sources it is assembled from, and hold them there as the answer moves.
The fourth is the one that is usually missing. Find, make and place all point forwards, and they could be read as a project with an end. But everything published starts ageing the day it goes live: prices move, tax years roll over, people leave, and the answer moves on without telling you. Holding is the work of reading every page you own against what the search now expects, and it is also what makes coverage honest — you can only report where you are cited if something is checking it continuously.
