AI visibility: showing up in ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews
Oliver Hodgson · June 2026
For twenty years SEO meant one thing: rank on Google’s results page. That page is still there — but more and more, the answer a person actually reads is written by an AI, drawing on sources it decides to trust.
Being one of those sources is a new kind of visibility, and it doesn’t always follow from a good classic ranking.
Why it’s different
Classic ranking rewards a single best page for a query. AI answers synthesise across many sources and cite the ones that are clear, well-structured, and unambiguous about who said what. Content that’s easy for a model to quote — direct answers, clean structure, real sourcing — tends to get pulled in.
It also moves faster and is harder to see. You won’t find “position 3 in ChatGPT” in a rank tracker, so most teams have no idea whether they’re present at all.
How to start
Track it. You can’t improve a surface you can’t measure — monitor your share of answers across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews for the questions that matter to you.
Then write to be cited: lead with the answer, structure it cleanly, source your claims, and keep it current. The same habits that make content genuinely helpful are the ones AI engines reward.
